▼ Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts: Blue Cross Massachusetts drops six Medicare Advantage plans and caps enrollment in the plans it keeps
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts told providers it will stop offering Medicare PPO Blue ValueRx in Essex and Middlesex counties. In Worcester County it will also stop offering PPO Blue EssentialRx, HMO SaverRx, HMO FlexRx and HMO ValueRx. It is placing federally approved enrollment limits on its continuing Medicare Advantage plans, so new members will be taken first come, first served. Group Medicare Advantage and Medex supplement plans are not affected. The Boston Globe reports that about 20,000 seniors are affected and that Blue Cross lost $275 million on Medicare Advantage in 2024 and 2025.
Your move
Pull Blue Cross Massachusetts clients on the six ending plans and place them by Dec. 31. Submit any application for a continuing Blue Cross plan early, because its enrollment caps can close without notice. For clients who want to keep Blue Cross, quote Medex with a standalone Part D plan, which has no enrollment limit, and check the guaranteed-issue timing.
